가방

가방 사 달라고 

남편한테 생떼를 부렸지요.

둘째아이한테 젖을 먹이고 일어나

모처럼 식탁에 앉아 미역국을 떠먹다가였죠.

내가 가방 얘기를 한 게 언젠데

그걸 여태까지 모른 척하고 있느냐고

앞치마 입은 채 내 앞에 앉은 남편을 후려친 거지요.

저녁에 

한 달 만에 엄마하고 간신히 통화됐는데요.

애 잘 낳고 젖도 잘 나온다고 했죠.

소리가 자꾸 끊어지는데

엄마가 급히 말하더군요. 

내 동생이 애를 낳았는데

옥수수가루죽이라도 맘껏 먹였으면 하니

돈을 좀 보내주면 안 되겠느냐고.

Bag

I badgered my husband to buy me a bag.

It was after I had breast-fed our second child and stood up and gulped down sea-weed soup at the table.

I slapped my husband sitting across from me wearing an apron, chiding him for pretending not to have heard me long after I had solicited the bag.

In the evening I managed to talk to Mother on the phone for the first time in a month.

I told her I had delivered the baby all right and there was enough milk.

While her voice was often interrupted,

Mother talked in a hurry;

Asked me whether I could remit her some money

To feed my younger sister enough corn-flour soup 

Now that she had delivered a baby.
