소문

보름달이 뜨면
푸른 동굴 속에서 나와 등을 굽히고
흰 꼬리를 다듬는다지.

꼬리가 있다는 소문은 있는데 본 사람은 없어서

꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 소문이 소문을 물고 의심이 의심을 물고 사람이 개를 물고 개가 달을 물고 하현달이 꼬리를 물고

꼬리 다듬는 모습을 본 사람은 간과 쓸개가 뽑힌다지.
저자거리에 상록수가 된다지.

역시,
꼬리가 아홉 개 달린 고수의 솜씨야
흰 터럭 한 올 남기지 않고
무슨 상처를 꿰매거나, 꿰맸던 실밥 같은 것만
수북이 남겨놓고 사라지다니

When the full moon rises
They say it emerges out of a blue cave,
Bends its back and trims its white tail.

Rumor has it that it has a tail
But nobody has seen it.

The tail bites tail, rumor bites rumor, doubt bites doubt, man bites dog, dog bites moon, waning moon bites tail.

They say he who has seen it grooming its tail gets his liver and gall bladder plucked out and becomes an evergreen tree in the market-place.

In fact
It’s the skill of a veteran with nine tails.

It has left behind a pile of lint from
Suturing some wounds,
Without leaving behind a single white hair.
