그림자

부동으로 사는 것이 

나무로 알고 있다면 

그건 나무를 모른다는 말  

나무가 얼마나 긴 팔과 다리를 가졌는지

얼마나 잘 눕고 일어나 멀리 걷고 달리는지 

이른 아침이나 늦은 오후 숲을 걷다 보면 

건너 계곡까지 제 그림자를 밀려 끌며  

신출귀몰 축지법을 쓰는 나무는 

부동의 명사가 아니라 

형용사도 되고 동사도 된다

태어난 자리가 죽음의 자리인 건 맞지만 

오전에는 저 나무가 이리로 건너오고 

오후엔 이 나무가 저리로 건너가며 

계절을 따라 자리를 바꿔 돌다가 

산이 텅 비는 밤이 되어서야 

제자리로 돌아와 신발을 벗고 

몸을 누인다는 걸 아는 자는 

그 산에 깃들어 사는 새들과 

나무 그림자와 새끼 다람쥐뿐

Shadow

If you think the tree lives an immobile life, that only shows you don’t know the tree and how it has long arms and legs, how skillfully it lies down, rises and walks and runs far.

As you walk through a forest on an early morning or a late afternoon, you’ll notice that the tree, which magically contracts distances by pushing its shadow out to the gorge on the other side, is not an immobile noun but can transform into an adjective and a verb.

Even if its birthplace is a place for death for sure, in the forenoon that tree crosses over here and this tree crosses over there in the afternoon. They go round and round changing places in keeping with the season;  only at night when the mountains become vacant they return to their original place. Then they take off their shoes and lay down their bodies ― Those who are aware of this fact are but the birds which dwell in the hills, the shadows of trees, and the baby squirrels.
