허밍

목청껏 부르지는 못하고 그저 

콧소리로나 따라가는 

갈잎 부딪는 소리로나 흥얼거리는

산등성이엔 희미한 낮달

강변 버드나무 가지 위

컬컬하게 속울음 삼키는 까치 

밭아가는 강물 속 

제자리에서나 뒤채는 피라미

물수제비 뜨는 건너편 저 중년이

텀벙텀벙 건넜을 청춘처럼

하늘엔 구름 몇 조각

불러 본다고 다시 노래가 되랴,

시절이 다시 오랴,

어깨에 앉은 노을같이

상강 지난 새벽 식어가는 방구들같이

서럽지는 않게 

노래가 되지 못하고, 흐음 흠 따라가는 

가을 강

Humming

Unable to call at the top of voice

Following merely with nasal tones

Whispering with rustling oak leaves

The day-moon dim over the ridge of the hill.

On the branches of the riverside willow tree

The magpies gulp down their inner wail throatily.

In the depleting river water

The minnows thrive in their own places.

The middle-aged man on the other bank skipping stones.

Like his youth he must have crossed tumbling

A few pieces of cloud drift in the sky.

Could he restore the song by singing it?

Will the season return?

Like the twilight that sits on the shoulders

Like a room cooling at a frosty dawn

The autumn river just obliges hmph!

Free from sorrow

Unable to mature into a song.
